Florida lawmaker wants teachers to grade parents (Part.1)

If an elementary school teacher graded you on your involvement in your child's education, what kind of a grade would you get?
Should your kid's first-grade teacher be grading you in the first place? If Florida state Rep. Kelli Stargel's bill becomes law, public school teachers will be required to grade the parents of students in kindergarten through the third grade.
The parents' grades of "satisfactory," "unsatisfactory" or "needs improvement" would be added to their children's report card.
Stargel, a Republican who sits on several education legislative committees, says that parental involvement is key to educating children for years to come.
As the mother of five, Stargel says, she understands the importance of her role in educating her children.
"I think a lot of parents understand that is something that is critical," she said. "On the other hand, you have some parents that don't realize they are not providing the needs."
Florida lawmakers have spent years overhauling the public school system to make schools and their teachers accountable for student achievements.
Many parents and teachers have not welcomed the changes. In the late 1990s, the state began the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or FCAT, in which a school would be graded based on the overall score of its students.
From the beginning, proponents of the FCAT wanted schools held accountable for their students' grades through standardized testing.
Critics contend that teachers are forced to spend too much time preparing students for the test instead of actually teaching.
Last year, Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed a bill that tied a teacher's pay to his or her students' achievement. Another version of the bill is expected to pass this year under new Gov. Rick Scott.
"We have student accountability, we have teacher accountability, and we have administration accountability," Stargel said. "This was the missing link, which was, look at the parent and making sure the parents are held accountable."



Japan to face Australia in Asian Cup final (Part.1)

Japan secured their place in the final of the Asian Cup after a dramatic penalty shoot out victory over South Korea.
Coach Alberto Zaccheroni's side triumphed 3-0 on penalties after the game was level at 1-1 after 90 minutes and 2-2 after extra time.
Japan will now face Australia in Saturday's final, after the Socceroos demolished Uzbekistan 6-0 in the other semifinal.
South Korea started the match brightly and took the lead on 23 minutes after Japan defender Yasuyuki Konno brought down Manchester United star Park Ji-sung in the penalty area. Ki Sung-yong converted from the spot.
Japan have been no strangers to going behind in this tournament, and they duly struck back nine minutes before the break.



Google to launch Groupon competitor (Part.1)

Google is preparing to launch Google Offers, the search giant's Groupon competitor, Mashable has learned.
We have the documents to prove it -- one of our sources has sent us a confidential fact sheet straight from the Googleplex about the company's new group buying service.
"Google Offers is a new product to help potential customers and clientele find great deals in their area through a daily email," the fact sheet says.
Google Offers looks and operates much like Groupon or LivingSocial. Users receive an e-mail with a local deal-of-the-day. They then have the opportunity to buy that deal within a specific time limit (we assume 24 hours). Once enough people have made the purchase, the Google Offer is triggered and users get that all-too-familiar $10 for $20 deal for that Indian restaurant you've never tried.



Why did Google's Eric Schmidt step down?(Part.1)

Apple isn't the only high-profile tech company that announced a major change in its executive ranks this week.
Google co-founder Larry Page will replace Eric Schmidt as CEO of the Mountain View, California, company on April 4, Google said Thursday. The news came three days after Apple announced its CEO, Steve Jobs, is taking an indefinite medical leave, and on the same day Hewlett-Packard said it was reshuffling its board of directors.
Schmidt, who guided Google and served as the company's primary public figure for nearly a decade, is stepping down to assume the role of executive chairman and will help manage business and government relations. Google's other co-founder, Sergey Brin, will focus efforts on unannounced new products.
The startling announcement was made in Google's quarterly earnings report (and informally on Schmidt's Twitter feed), in which the company reported revenue growth.
"People are surprised," Fortune tech writer Michael Copeland told CNNMoney. "Nobody expected this."
Google offered no clear explanation for the executive shakeup, although Schmidt, in a Google blog post, wrote, "Larry, Sergey and I have been talking for a long time about how best to simplify our management structure and speed up decision making."
Observers, however, offered some theories.
In the way that HP's move might help people forget about the fumbling of former CEO Mark Hurd's ouster, Google's change could be designed to erase memories of some awkward statements made recently by its outgoing CEO.
Schmidt's public image took some hits after a string of verbal gaffes.
During an interview on CNN's "Parker Spitzer," Schmidt advised people unhappy with Google's Street View project, which raised privacy concerns after Google's vehicles inadvertently collected people's e-mail addresses and passwords over Wi-Fi networks, to move.
He also drew criticism for a CNBC interview in which Schmidt seemed to dismiss the importance of privacy, saying, "If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place."
"Last year wasn't a great year for Eric," said Danny Sullivan, an expert in the online search industry who runs the blog Search Engine Land. "He's had a number of gaffes he's chalked up to things being out of context and jokes taken the wrong way.



Thousands in peril in Brazil flooding (Part 1)

Thousands of families living on mountain slopes or on riverbanks face extreme risk of being washed away in the heavy rains and flooding that have killed nearly 500 people in Rio de Janeiro state, authorities said Thursday.
Officials feared that many more were dead, buried in landslides or washed away by gushing waters. Mud rushed down hillsides and into towns and cities as murky brown rivers cut through lush landscape.
President Dilma Rousseff flew over the affected areas Thursday and landed in a slushy, trash-littered soccer field in the city of Friburgo, the official Agencia Brasil news agency said.
She trudged through mud in her rain boots to talk to residents in a neighborhood where four of seven firefighters attempting to rescue people were buried under mud. Three others were pulled out alive.
"We are going to take firm action" to help the devastated areas, Rousseff said.
Brazilian authorities have been criticized for a lack of disaster planning and allowing people to build homes in areas known to become treacherous in the rainy season.
The roofs of houses and treetops peeked out from the water. People used inflatable rafts or inner tubes to navigate submerged roads. One family sat perched on the roof of their house, their predicament broadcast on television.



Portugal move eases Europe debt crisis (Part 1)

The intensifying European debt crisis appeared to take a step back from the brink on Wednesday when besieged Portugal was able to sell more than €1.2bn in long-term debt at much lower than expected interest rates.
European officials warned that it was far too early to consider Portugal safe from becoming the third eurozone country pushed into a bail-out because of its inability to fund government operations through borrowing on the open market.
But the German government, among others, signalled that it could help ease fears of a rapid spread of the eurozone debt crisis to Spain and other debt-laden economies on Europe's periphery.
Steffen Kampeter, Germany's deputy finance minister, said he hoped the outcome of the Portuguese debt issue would "put an end to the irrationality in the market".
Angela Merkel, German chancellor, said the auction -- the first long-term bond issue by a peripheral eurozone member this year -- went "quite well". She added: "We will stand by the euro. Germany will do whatever is necessary so the euro remains stable."



It's not just t-t-t-telephones for Lady Gaga. (Part 1)

The mega-famous pop star came to the Consumer Electronics Show on Thursday to announce a new line of cameras and photo printers with Polaroid, where she is officially the "creative director."
Polaroid "really let me put my hands in there and design this s--- myself," she said.
Polaroid's Grey Label product line, which isn't available yet, will feature sunglasses with a camera embedded in them, a camera that shoots digital and Polaroid images and a portable photo printer that Gaga says she takes to bars with her -- in her purse.
"I suppose many of you are nerdy enough to carry around a mobile printer," she said, acknowledging the technophiles in attendance. "I know I will."
Wearing sunglasses, a black dress and a dark veil, Gaga looked somewhat like Jackie O at a funeral as she took a picture of the audience and printed it on the new Polaroid printer, which creates 3-by-4-inch images that look like classic Polaroids.
"Smile! You're so f---ing famous!" she said, snapping the shot. "Oh no, wait, I just took a photo of Canon. Let me go back."



The Next Big Thing In Social Media

On the latest episode of The Office, temp Ryan founds his own social media startup, WUPHF. The service purportedly sends a message to friends on all their channels, Facebook, chat, SMS and Twitter. It even prints out a ‘wuphf’ (pronounced “woof,” the sitcom’s version of a ‘tweet’) on the nearest printer. Well it turns out WUPHF.com is real. Sort of.

The website exists, and you can even attempt to sign up for the service and get sent a wuphf. I tried to do so to see how far the charade would actually go. Disappointingly, I wasn’t able to get a wuphf sent to my Twitter account or mobile phone. For my Facebook account, the website gave me a pop-up message: “FACEBOOK: WUPHF is unable to post due to lame Facebook privacy policy.” Touche. I did get an email from “Ryan Howard” at ry@wuphf.com, saying I had been signed up for the service, however.

The rest of the website features goodies like the “About” page, with a message to potential investors that name-checks successful technology companies like Google and Microsoft.

Conan Season 1 Episode November 17 2010

As far as Stand-Up Talk shows go, Conan is considered among the top series on TV and it looks as though today’s episode will please loyal fans of the show who’ve been tuning in since it first premiered in November 8 2010. Today on Conan the host welcomes Russell Brand / Susan Casey / the 88. The show will also have the usual comedy bits, stand up, and a variety of other interesting elements that are sure to keep viewers entertained.

For those who haven’t been following the show for the last 1 year it has been airing then let us give you a recap of what the show is about, ahead of today’s episode. Conan O’Brien is back at the lead of a daily talk show – but this time he brings his crazy Team Coco to cable television, hoping to continue the same brand of comedy that has made him a darling of the late night talk show scene.

Sky Nellor Looks For The One On Bravo Show

Even ex-models-turned-djs have trouble with looking for “The One”. And, Sky Nellor is no exception. The millionaire spinner recently appeared on Bravo’s “The Million Matchmaker” to try her luck at finding someone she can be with forever.

Sky had a pleasant enough episode, and she ended up going out with one of the prospects, Kevin. But, the date didn’t pave the way for Sky to start looking at white, wedding gowns or listen to bridal church music. A lot of people were disappointed, and so many speculations were raised. Either Sky doesn’t really dance to the tune of happily-ever-afters, or Kevin can’t level with Sky’s exes (think Adrian Brody and Jamie Foxx).

So, apparently, Sky would not be strutting around town with a new man on her arm soon. She’ll continue to be inside a dj’s booth with her turntable.
